India runs some of the largest publicly funded health cover in the world, and most families who qualify for it underuse it. The reverse mistake is just as common: assuming a scheme card removes any need for private cover, then discovering at admission that the treatment sits outside the package list, the hospital is not empanelled, or the annual limit is already spent.
These guides set out what each scheme actually pays, using official figures, and what falls outside it. The aim is a clear answer to a practical question: given what you already have, what is the remaining gap actually worth covering?

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have both an Ayushman Bharat card and private health insurance?
Holding private cover does not by itself remove a PM-JAY entitlement, and the two serve different situations. Where both could pay, Indian rules on multiple policies generally let the policyholder choose which insurer to claim from, and the same expense cannot be recovered twice. Our combining guide covers the sequencing at admission.
What does Ayushman Bharat not cover?
The entitlement is capped per family per year, applies to hospitalisation rather than outpatient care, works at empanelled hospitals, and operates from a defined package list with a documented negative list. Those boundaries — not the headline cover amount — are what determine whether a family needs additional cover.
Should I rely on CGHS or buy private health insurance?
They are structured differently rather than ranked. CGHS serves central government employees and pensioners on a contribution basis with its own rate schedule and empanelment, while private indemnity cover is bought individually and priced on age. Our CGHS comparison guide sets out how each one pays.
